I am one of the few people who will tell my clients the truth, even though that means I won't get their business in some things. I only recommend TERM insurance (which btw is really term insurance, not someone's idea of spin doctoring another type of cash value insurance similar to that whole life crap you mentioned) and fixed rate and term mortgages. The unsubsidized school loans are only a good idea if you absolutely need additional resources, because at least they're low interest rate loans and the interest is tax deductible. I also recommend at least putting in enough money in your 401k to get the maximum match. However, after that, I do recommend a Roth IRA (funded with a customized portfolio of mutual funds based on current age and estimated time of retirement as well as how much tolerance a client has for market volatility) if a client qualifies for one. I have one client who is funding her Roth IRA with a money market because she's actually past retirement age, but still working These days I get paid nothing to provide that service. It's just the right thing to do.

Responding to LH - that pf writer's advice is bad ...

Responding to LH - that pf writer's advice is bad *now*, and is a good example of why we don't take advice at face value.

I have a friend who (some time ago) did some research and was convinced she'd found a very smart stock purchase, and used student loan money to do it. But it all goes back to doing your own work and being prepared to deal with the consequences.

It's also a good lesson in knowing your risk tolerance - I'm way more conservative and wouldn't have done it.
