A lot of people don't realize you can contribute to a 529 for a child who is not yet born yet. They don't even have to be conceived. You can open a 529 in your own name and change the name of the beneficiary once the kid is born. If I were a birth mom looking to place my child with a caring home, a gesture like that would count for a lot.
